The Psychosociological and Material Impact and Consequences of the Coup D'État in Seychelles

I thank you for taking the initiative to set up this web site.

In order for the Seychellois people to truly thrive as individuals and as a society a very lucid approach will have to be adopted, sooner rather than later, in order to unravel the full impact and consequences of the 5th June 1977 coup d'état in Seychelles. History may yet prove that it was a supremely audacious act, if not downright temerariousness, as one is forced to take stock of the full psychosociological impact of that solitary egotistical act and the ensuing one-party quasi military rule. The overall failures of that regime may yet still outweigh any positive achievements and will not be excusable only by the inherent flaws of the system aspiring to redress by force the shortcomings of the post-independence democratic system ruled by a coalition government comprised also of the perpetrators of the coup d'état. One and all, will have to face the facts and acknowledge with humility the errors of judgement, albeit with hindsight. It would nonetheless be a start to elucidate the truth and make amends if not tangibly but at least morally. No doubt as much as humility, faith and hope will have to be present nourished by the spirit of charity (1 Corinthians 13) to enable the true healing and empowering process to take place.

Restitution of property or other compensatory settlements will needless to say never be able to settle the full extent of whatever wrongs may have been experienced by their recipients and neither will the Nation ever have the material means to ever do so as may be deemed appropriate. It would at least be a token of the common acknowledgement of the society as a whole of the need to make a fresh start and heal as best as possible from the bruises of a somewhat intrepid childhood in the life of a nation. There are those who will never formulate a claim either because of their untimely demise or for reasons best known to them. In any case let us pray as we head into the new millenium that we learn from our mistakes and become more charitable and value peace in the mutual respect of one another as well as the environment we live in. So much can happen within one life time and the world is more and more but one big village!

May god's grace be with you all and my best regards to all.
